Trainee Actuary / Analyst - Actuarial Pensions

Key Responsibilities

The duties of this role include but are not limited to:

  • Preparing statements for individual members who may be approaching retirement or leaving employment and want to know what pension they are entitled to in the future. This involves calculations in excel templates and preparing a statement or letter to formally communicate the benefits available to the member.
  • Calculating annual pension increases, preparing statement templates and using mail merge to produce annual benefit statements for all Scheme members.
  • Assisting in the preparation of data and calculations for actuarial valuations and financial reporting of pension schemes for our clients. This involves comparing sets of data to determine any changes or differences, deriving assumptions, running cashflow models, rolling forward historic asset figures to produce a present value, using complex excel spreadsheets and writing formal reports.
  • Preparing presentations on proposed assumptions and preliminary valuation results for trustees.
  • Updating Investment Strategy Reviews, Risk Registers and Statements of Investment Principles.
  • Representing BWCI professionally and effectively with clients and maintaining a high standard whether by phone, in writing or in person.
  • Being responsible for checking the work of other team members in the Pensions Actuarial department.
  • Providing support to partners and staff of BWCI as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Good grade in GSCE Mathematics essential
  • A Levels/Degree in Mathematics or Science based subjects desirable
  • Basic use of Word, Excel and E-mail are a minimum requirement
  • If successful progress is made the appointed candidate will have the option to be supported to undertake the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries exams.
  • Training will be provided in all aspects of the work required.

The ideal candidate should be:

  • Able to demonstrate good communication and teamwork skills
  • Able to work with minimum supervision on tasks assigned to them after an initial briefing of the task required.
  • Interested in Mathematical Modeling and Problem Solving
